I have built more MVPs than I can count, plenty of them the slow and expensive way, so I have opinions about the cheapest way to build a SaaS MVP that are paid for in wasted months. Cheapest is not just about the dollar cost of tools. The expensive part of an MVP is almost always time, and the option that looks cheapest up front is often the one that costs you the most of it.
The three roads.
There are basically three ways to get to a working SaaS MVP, and they fail in different places.
- No-code, fast to a demo and cheap to start, but you hit a wall the moment your idea needs something the tool does not do, and you cannot own or move what you built
- From scratch, total control, but you spend the first few months building auth, billing, and tenancy before you touch your actual idea
- From a boilerplate, you inherit the boring plumbing already built and spend your time on the part that is yours
The cheapest MVP is not the one with the smallest tool bill. It is the one that gets a real thing in front of real users fastest, without a wall you cannot climb later.
Why no-code is cheap until it is not.
No-code is genuinely great for proving an idea exists. The problem is the ceiling. The day your MVP needs a feature the platform does not support, or you want to actually own the thing you built, you are stuck, and often the answer is to rebuild it properly anyway. So the cheap start turns into paying twice. For a throwaway test, fine. For something you intend to grow, it is a loan with interest.
Why from-scratch is the expensive one hiding as the pure one.
Building from nothing feels responsible and it is the most expensive road by far, because you spend your scarcest resource, time, on plumbing that every SaaS already has. I have done this. You look up two months later and you have a login screen and a billing page and none of the thing you actually wanted to build.
Make it something yours.

Explore the codebasesWhy a good boilerplate usually wins.
Starting from a boilerplate you own gets you the plumbing for a one-time cost and drops you at the interesting part on day one. You keep full ownership, unlike no-code, and you skip the two-month plumbing detour, unlike from scratch. The one condition is that the boilerplate has to actually be good, because inheriting a mess is its own kind of expensive.
Pair that with an AI coding tool and it gets faster still. The AI is great at shaping a solid foundation into your specific thing, and dangerous at generating fragile plumbing from nothing. So the cheapest real path in 2026 is a good foundation plus AI aimed at your 20%.
The cheapest road, honestly.
The cheapest way to build a SaaS MVP is the one that reaches real users fastest without a wall or a rebuild waiting for you. For most people that is a good boilerplate you own, not the smallest monthly tool bill. I go deeper on that call in SaaS boilerplate vs building from scratch, and the starter-kit specifics are in the Next.js multi-tenant SaaS starter kit guide.
Cheapest is fastest to real, not smallest to start.
