I ran my agency on WordPress for years. It was the obvious default, and for a long time it was fine. In 2026 I moved my whole client portfolio off it. Not because WordPress cannot build a site, it obviously can, but because maintaining dozens of them had quietly become a tax on my business.
The plugin tax.
Every client site I ran was a small pile of plugins, and every plugin is a moving part that can break, conflict, or quietly go unmaintained. Multiply that across a whole portfolio and the real cost shows up. Hours every month spent updating, testing, and un-breaking sites that were supposed to be done and paid for.
A static site has no plugins and no database to maintain, so the upkeep that used to scale with my client count mostly went away.
To be fair to WordPress, the raw cost was never crazy. I ran my client sites on WP Engine, about a hundred of them for around $600 a month, and I paid roughly $745 a year on top of that for the premium plugin and subscription licenses. The bill was never my problem. The time was. Every one of those sites was mine to update, test, and un-break, forever.

Plugin vulnerabilities are the most common way small-business sites get compromised, and I have cleaned up the aftermath more than once. On WordPress, staying safe means staying on top of patches across every site, forever. A static site has almost no attack surface. There is no database, no plugin runtime, nothing to inject into. The safest site I can hand a client is the one with the least to exploit.
Why static beats database-driven on speed.
WordPress builds pages from a database on every request, then leans on caching plugins to hide it. I got tired of babysitting a caching stack just to get a fast page. Static sites are clean HTML on a CDN, so they pass Core Web Vitals by default. Faster pages help my clients rank and convert, and I do not have to maintain anything to keep them that way.
That is the model behind Seedly Sites hosting and performance. Every client site ships as static HTML to the edge, with the structural Core Web Vitals green by default and load speed coming down to image discipline, which is the fight worth having.
The fastest, safest, lowest-maintenance site is the one with no database and no plugins to keep alive.
Migration without starting over.
The only reason I stayed on WordPress as long as I did was the switching cost. Rebuilding a whole client portfolio by hand is a non-starter, so I built a real migration pipeline instead. It ports an existing site into the builder with a content-parity gate, remaps the internal links, and brings the media along, so I could move clients over without rebuilding from scratch.
What I moved to.
I was not about to leave WordPress for another rented platform with the same lock-in. I moved to something I own - a white-label builder that outputs clean static sites with no plugin tax, no security treadmill, and no per-site fees. That is what I packaged as Seedly Sites.
