You've got the React fundamentals down now. Components, state, props, effects, events and forms. So let's talk about how Claude Code can put your React work into overdrive. You don't have to write every line from scratch anymore... you describe what you want, and Claude helps you build it.
Quick confession. I'm an operator, not a developer... SEO and local marketing is where I came from. I'd never touched Claude Code before, and within a month of picking it up I'd shipped 17 projects across about 30 repos. So if this part makes you nervous, you're in good company.
Why Use Claude Code for React?
React work involves a LOT of patterns and boilerplate. Creating components, setting up state, handling forms and fetching data all follow pretty predictable structures. That's exactly the kind of stuff Claude Code is great at.
Scaffolding projects - Setting up React with TypeScript, routing and styling in seconds
Generating components - You describe what you need and get working code back
Debugging issues - Explaining errors and suggesting fixes
Refactoring code - Cleaning up the structure without changing how it behaves
Learning patterns - Asking "how do I..." and getting working examples
Starting a New React Project
Forget memorizing the exact Vite commands and configuration. Just describe what you want.
Example
You: Create a new React project with TypeScript using Vite.
Add Tailwind CSS for styling.
Claude Code will run the setup commands, configure TypeScript, install Tailwind and lay out the project structure, all in one go. Something that might eat 10 minutes of reading docs takes seconds.
Generating Components
Describe the component you need in plain English.
Example
You: Create a reusable Button component that accepts:
- label (text to display)
- variant (primary, secondary, or danger)
- onClick handler
- optional disabled state
Use Tailwind for styling.
Claude generates a full component with TypeScript types, default prop values, styling and accessibility attributes. From there you can tweak it to fit exactly what you need.
Building Features Step by Step
For bigger features, break them into steps and have Claude build them one at a time.
Step 1. Start with the Data Model
Ask Claude what state your feature needs and how it should be structured.
Example
You: I'm building a shopping cart. What state do I need?
Step 2. Build the UI Components
Describe what it should look like and let Claude generate the JSX.
Example
You: Create a CartItem component that shows the product name,
price, quantity with +/- buttons, and a remove button.
Step 3. Connect the Logic
Have Claude wire up the event handlers and state updates.
Example
You: Add the logic to update quantity and remove items from the cart.
Use the functional form of setState for reliability.
Debugging with Claude Code
When you run into an error, describe the problem to Claude.
Example
You: My component re-renders infinitely. Here's my useEffect:
useEffect(() => {
setData(fetchData());
});
What's wrong?
Claude spots the missing dependency array, explains why it causes infinite renders and hands you the fix. That's a whole lot faster than digging through Stack Overflow and trying to make sense of six different answers.
Common Prompts for React Development
Here are some prompts that work well for everyday React tasks.
Creating Forms
Example
Create a signup form with name, email, and password.
Add validation: email must be valid, password at least 8 characters.
Show errors on blur, disable submit until all fields are valid.
Adding Data Fetching
Example
Add a useEffect that fetches posts from /api/posts when the
component mounts. Include loading and error states.
Building Navigation
Example
Create a responsive navbar with links for Home, About, and Contact.
Highlight the active link. Collapse to a hamburger menu on mobile.
Handling Lists
Example
Create a TodoList component with add, toggle complete, and delete.
Use proper keys and show a count of remaining items.
Styling Components
Example
Make this Card component responsive: single column on mobile,
two columns on tablet, three columns on desktop. Use Tailwind's
grid utilities.
Tips for Better Prompts
Getting the most out of Claude Code for React really comes down to being clear about what you want.
Vague Prompt
Better Prompt
"Make a button"
"Create a Button component with primary/secondary variants and an optional icon slot"
"Add dark mode"
"Add a dark mode toggle using a ThemeContext that persists the choice in localStorage"
"Fix this error"
"This useEffect runs infinitely - I think the dependency array is wrong. Here's the code..."
"Make it look good"
"Style this card with a subtle shadow, rounded corners, and a hover lift effect using Tailwind"
Iterating on Generated Code
Claude rarely nails everything on the first try (neither do I, for what it's worth). Treat whatever it gives you as a starting point.
Review the code - Make sure you understand what it does
Test it - Run it and see if it actually behaves right
Ask for changes - "Move the state up to the parent" or "Add error handling for the fetch"
Refine the styling - "Make the padding larger" or "Use a flex layout instead of grid"
Example
You: This looks good, but can you:
1. Add a loading skeleton instead of the "Loading..." text
2. Cache the API response in localStorage
3. Add a retry button when the fetch fails
What Claude Code Can't Do
Claude Code is powerful, but it's got limits you should keep in mind.
It can't see your screen on its own - Describe visual issues in words, paste in a screenshot, or share the error message
It might use outdated patterns - React moves fast. Check that suggestions use current best practices (hooks, not class components)
It doesn't know your full codebase - Point Claude at the relevant files when you ask about how things fit together
It can make mistakes - ALWAYS review and test generated code before you ship it
A Complete Workflow
Here's what a typical React session with Claude Code looks like.
Scaffold - "Create a React project with TypeScript and Tailwind"
Plan - "I want to build a recipe app. What components do I need?"
Build - "Create the RecipeCard component with an image, title, time, and rating"
Connect - "Add a useEffect to fetch recipes from /api/recipes"
Polish - "Make it responsive and add a loading skeleton"
Debug - "The list doesn't update when I add a recipe. Here's my code..."
Improve - "Refactor this to use a custom hook for the fetch logic"
Each step builds on the one before it. You stay in charge of the big architecture calls and Claude handles the implementation details.
TL;DR
Claude Code helps with scaffolding, generating components, debugging and refactoring React apps
Break big features into step-by-step prompts to get better results
Be specific in your prompts, with types, prop names, behavior and styling details
Always review and understand generated code before you use it
Use Claude for learning too, by asking it to explain patterns or compare approaches
Treat Claude's output as a starting point to build on, and never as the finished product
Module Complete!
Congrats, you finished the React module! You now understand components, JSX, state, props, events, conditional rendering, effects, forms, and how to speed the whole thing up with Claude Code. You're ready to go build real React apps... so go build something.
